Belieber [noun] : A believer in Justin Bieber. A Justin Bieber fanatic (wiktionary.org/wiki/Belieber).
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who love Justin Bieber (and are not ashamed to be classified as “Beliebers”) and those who despise him. I have never understood this phenomenon. There are many artists in the world that I do not like – sometimes it’s a moral thing (you know that whole Chris Brown abusing Rihanna thing?) and sometimes I just really don’t enjoy the style of music (for me, that’s U2). However, it is quite rare that people find it acceptable to despise these artists, specifically when it boils down to musical taste. For some reason, Anti-Beliebers are on a mission to spread the word that Justin Bieber is “gay”, he has no talent, he sings like a girl, he is a bad role model, bla bla bla.
My response? If you don’t like Justin Bieber because his style of music isn’t your cup of tea, that’s totally fine. There are people in the world who are considered far ‘worse’ than him – musicians who really are bad role models or musicians who really cant sing. Why not hate on them instead?
I was lucky enough to watch Justin Bieber live in concert in Cape Town this week. Other than sitting in traffic for an hour and a half (which I expected) and missing the opening acts due to bad communication from Big Concerts (which I did not expect), I had an amazing time.
I have been to many live shows where the band members stand awkwardly on stage, trying to get through their set list. I have also seen some pretty good performances, particularly from some of our up and coming South African acts. However, for the first time, I realised why it is worth it to spend so much money on watching a live performance. The dancing, the lights, the smoke, the crowd interaction, and the general vibe. THAT is why you pay to watch live music!
If Justin Bieber ever comes back to Cape Town, I’d totally watch him perform again. I may even stand outside his hotel and wait for him to come out. Oh wait, I already did that.
